A Brooklyn rehabilitation center is working wonders for women who are looking to get themselves back on track, despite its location. NY1's Cheryl Wills filed the following report.

At first glance, a pair of brownstones located at 976 Park Place in Crown Heights look like any other residence in Brooklyn. But once inside, people realize that it's a safe harbor for women who have hit rock bottom.

The drug rehabilitation facility is called Anchor House and it helps women like Lindsie Baker, 19, recover from substance abuse.

"I've had addictions with sexual addiction, electronical addiction, and here I've been able to withdraw from each one of them," Baker said.

Donna Reese, 45, was addicted to crack cocaine for nearly 20 years. For the last four and a half months she's been clean and she did it cold turkey.

"I haven't had cravings, no drugs, I've been good," Reese said.

Ironically, Anchor House is not tucked away in a remote part of the city. The faith-based organization sits in the middle of a crime-ridden block in Brooklyn.

"It's interesting enough to have a substance abuse program in the middle of a neighborhood that is very highly saturated with substance abuse, with the drug dealers, with often times you can hear gunshots," said Anchor House Program Director Alison King.

The women who live in Anchor House say they turn a deaf ear to the gunshots ringing above their heads. More importantly, they cherish the sanctuary that shelters them from life's storms, and say they are committed to making a personal change.
