Next month marks the 50th anniversary of the first man in space, and some Brooklyn students celebrated by welcoming two explorers to their school.

Russian cosmonaut Maxim Suraev and American astronaut Marsha Ivins captivated students at P.S. 200 in Bath Beach on Friday.

With photos and stories, they shared about their experiences traveling space.

"I think it's really important to show not just kids, but their parents too, that there is ability to reach and achieve great things of you set your mind to it. Because that's exactly what we did in the '60s," said Ivins.

"Well it's really exciting, it's like the best experience. It's like a once-in-lifetime experience. You'll probably never see this in your life," said fifth grader David Spielman.

Of Ivins' five space flights, three were on Atlantis, a shuttle will close out the U.S. Space Shuttle program with its final flight in June.
