A new urgent care center opened in Chelsea Tuesday night, in an attempt fill the void left by last year's closing of St. Vincent's Hospital.
The North Shore-LIJ HealthMedical Group Urgent Care Center is located at 121A West 20th Street, at the same location where the non-profit VillageCare operates its primary care center.
The center will be open on evenings and overnight on weekdays and Saturdays and will operate 24 hours on Sunday.
Patients will be seen on a walk-in basis, 365 days a year.
"From Downtown really up to probably around Times Square has not really had a full service Emergency Room. A fair number of those emergency and non-emergency cases have been going to the surrounding hospitals on the East Side. So, we can actually help see some of those cases quickly," said North Shore-LIJ Urgent Care Director Dr. Benjamin Greenblatt.
According to the center's press release, the 4,000-square-foot center has exam rooms, diagnostic services and an onsite laboratory.
St. Vincent's Hospital shut down last April due to financial problems after 160 years of serving the community.
