A rally was held in Queens Thursday to remember recent victims of domestic violence.
Organizers say recent attacks are putting a spotlight on the issue.
They say this includes the death of Yelena Buschenko and her mother, who were allegedly stabbed to death by a man who was obsessed with Yelena.
The group also cites the death of a woman who was allegedly shot by her ex in the Long Island City pharmacy where she worked, even though she had an order of protection against him.
"We are here to demand changes are made in the legislation. An order of protection is not enough. We need something more efficient. It's already been proven that you go to courts, you go to the criminal courts, you go to the prison, and it doesn't work," said National Dominican Women's Caucus President Zenaida Mendez.
"These men don't know how to behave, so we need legislation to prevent woman abuse," said one rally participant.
Organizers say a woman is abused or killed in the U.S. every 12 seconds.
