The New York Blood Center is looking for more first-time African-American donors in its effort to help fight Sickle Cell Disease.
The disease occurs in about one out of every 500 African-American babies and affects between 70,000 and 100,000 Americans nationwide.
The latest request stems from 37-year-old Davina Daniels from Queens. She has sickle cell disease and currently only has one donor who matches her blood type.
She is one of many New Yorkers in the same situation.
First-time Hispanic donors are also being asked to participate regularly, and if you're a match for someone you're encouraged to donate every 56 days.
To find out more about donating blood, you can contact the New York Blood Center at 800-933-BLOOD or visit NYBloodCenter.org.
