The popular Brooklyn Brewery is expanding into a new space.

The brewery took over the vacant building next to its plant in Williamsburg as part of an expansion expected to double production by 2013.

The search for a place to expand took about five years and almost lead the brewery not just out of the neighborhood, but out of the borough – to upstate New York.

"All the landlords in this neighborhood, in Williamsburg, were looking for Whole Foods, or Costco, or a Bank, or a hotel, they weren't interested in an industrial operation like this,” said Brooklyn Brewery president Steve Hindy.

Last year, the brewery made 110,000 barrels, or 1.7-million cases, of beer in the smaller facility.

"Last year we grew by 20 percent, so the craft segment is really expanding, and Brooklyn Brewery is expanding faster than the rest of the segment,” Hindy said.

Operators say more space also provides more room for tours and special events.

"Lots of opportunities to bring people in and showcase the space, introduce them to the brewery and our beers,” said Brooklyn Brewery marketing manager Ben Hudson.

"Now that we've moved the bottling line out of the tasting room area into the new expansion space, we've got that space for events, tours, and tastings all week long,” said Ben Hudson, marketing manager for Brooklyn Brewery.

"A lot of people are interested in where their beer is coming from, how it's made, who the people behind the beer are, and local is definitely back,” said Hindy.
