New Yorkers were celebrating Sunday the first day of Kwanzaa.
The holiday celebrates African-American culture and is meant to coincide with the African harvest.
Each night a candle is lit to mark one of seven principles of progress, which include unity, family and society, purpose and faith.
A California State University professor created the holiday in 1966.
The week-long celebration ends with a feast on New Year's Eve.
