Yankee Stadium played host to a different type of championship game Tuesday as two football teams from Brooklyn rumbled in the Bronx for the Public School Athletic League's High School title. NY1's Jeanine Ramirez filed the following report.
It was a Brooklyn showdown in the Bronx Tuesday night as Fort Hamilton High School took on Abraham Lincoln in the Public School Athletic League Championship Football Game. In the end, Fort Hamilton came out on top.
"Oh my God! Everything we worked for baby. Everything from camp to summer it all paid off baby. Thank you!" said Fort Hamilton High School Cornerback Dylan Campili.
"We was a family. It was a close game. We were down. We came back at half. And we did it! We did it," said Fort Hamilton High School Quarterback Marvin Centeno.
Going into the game both teams were undefeated. In the first half, Lincoln was dominant with a touchdown for six; Fort Hamilton was scoreless. But in the second half, it was all Fort Hamilton, scoring a touchdown for six and a two point conversion.
Final score was 8-6.
"It's unbelievable. It's a great run. And a tight ball game. It went down to the wire. But our kids persevered," said Fort Hamilton High School Head Coach Daniel Perez.
For more than a decade the city final was played on a Brooklyn field. But Tuesday night it was Yankee Stadium hosting its first high school football game.
College football came to the stadium last month when Notre Dame beat Army.
On December 30th, Kansas State will face Syracuse University at the inaugural New Era Pinstripe Bowl.
Fans who spoke with NY1 say there's no better place to catch the gridiron action.
"It feels amazing. Most schools don't get to go to Yankee Stadium. It's really awesome," said one fan.
"This is the greatest franchise. This is the Yankees. So we're excited," said another.
Besides a huge turnout, elected officials even got in on the competition Tuesday.
"Two Brooklyn teams playing for the crown for the PSAL. It's great, a new beginning for Brooklyn. And I have to say something, tomorrow in the City Council I have to wear have a Fort Hamilton hat and shirt because I lost a bet to Councilman Gentile," said City Councilman Domenic Recchia of Brooklyn.
Fort Hamilton won two consecutive championships in 2005 and 2006.
