The latest New Yorker of the Week, New York City Police Detective Feris "Jonesy" Jones, gave new meaning to the phrase "New York's Finest." NY1's John Schiumo filed the following report. Police Officer Feris "Jonesy" Jones never fired her gun before in 20 years in the city police force, but when she did she instantly became a part of New York folklore.
The single mother was just getting her hair done when an armed robber came into a hair salon in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
"She was ready for him, demonstrating stunning marksmanship in the process," said Kelly.
"Stunning marksmanship" is to put it mildly. First, Jones calmly got the other women in the salon safely out of the way.
When the gunman opened fire, Jones answered with shots of her own.
"Officer Jones returned fire, shooting the gun out of the perpetrator's hands, and another bullet hit the knob of the front door, blocking his exit and forcing him to escape through a window," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The gunman, identified as Winston Cox, was soon caught by police, and tragedy was averted thanks to Jones' fast thinking and calm manner.
"That's my personality. I don't fuss about much," said Jones.
The mayor promoted Jones in a Tuesday ceremony at City Hall.
"Today, we recognize that heroic service by promoting officer Jones to the rank of detective," said Bloomberg.
The accolades followed Jones back to Brooklyn, where Borough President Marty Markowitz presented her with a proclamation, and her hair dresser and other women from the salon were on hand to thank her.
"'Jonesy,' as she loves to be called -- and we love to call her that -- as a proud Brooklynite and as a strong woman and a role model for young and old alike, I'll tell you, her story has put a smile on the faces of New Yorkers," said Markowitz.
On Friday, Jones and other NYPD officers received their detective certificate from the police commissioner in yet another promotion ceremony.
"Today, Detective Jones has earned the admiration of her fellow officers and the gratitude of all New Yorkers," said Kelly.
So, for protecting those around her and saving their lives, Feris "Jonesy" Jones is the latest New Yorker of the Week.
