A public meeting was held Tuesday night in Brooklyn to discuss the future of Floyd Bennett Field.
Residents gathered to share their visions with park planners.
Floyd Bennett Field was the city's first municipal airport. It's now a 1,400 acre park that spans Brooklyn and Queens.
The space not only includes aircraft hangers but also ball fields, camp sites, a marina and even wildlife from the neighboring Gateway National Park.
Advocates say they want the area to live up to its potential and put the Gateway park back on the map.
"It really could be a great recreational destination for New York, and a great asset to the community. But what we're trying to find out this evening is the sorts of improvements that can really make that happen," said Robert Pirani of the Regional Plan Association.
"We want to start looking at it from top to bottom. And we want to make it a destination park for our neighborhood. And we also want to make this a place we're proud to call a national park. It's been neglected for too long," said Congressman Anthony Weiner.
A second meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday in Queens.
Planners will take input from the meetings into consideration as they put together a final report that's due in February.
