Walkers and runners pounded the pavement in Central Park Sunday for the 20th annual Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure."

Politicians and celebrities joined thousands of breast cancer survivors and supporters -- all trying to raise money to find a cure for breast cancer.

"We want it to be a world where there is a definitive cure for breast cancer and that women and their families don't have to live with some level of fear in the back of their mind that they might get breast cancer, that their mom or their wife might get breast cancer," said City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

"This race is not just about running a race, it's about working together to try to run breast cancer out of town," said Susan G. Komen Greater NYC CEO Dr. Dara Richardson-Heron.

Nancy Brinker founded the race as a promise to her sister, who died in 1982. Since then, it has become the largest series of run/walk events in the world with more than 1.5 million people participating in 140 events.
