Fifth-seeded Samantha Stosur defeated 12-seed Elena Dementieva in a third-set tiebreaker at 1:35 this morning to advance to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open.
The 2-hour, 38-minute match was the latest-finishing women's match in the tournament’s history.
Two-time Open champs Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters also advanced yesterday.
On the men's side, fourth-seeded Andy Murray lost in four sets to 25th-seed Stanislas Wawrinka.
Most of the other top seeds advanced, including top-ranked Rafael Nadal.
