Interfaith leaders met at a Muslim Center in Jamaica, Queens on Friday to express support for the controversial proposed mosque near the World Trade Center site.

The leaders were joined by City Comptroller John Liu at the Jamaica Muslim Center.

They said their biggest concern is the denial of basic freedom of religion.

"None of those reasons, none of those excuses are acceptable, because we have freedom of religion here, in New York and in America," said Liu. "At the end of the day, nobody's asking for special treatment. We just want equal treatment."

"We're very concerned that the fabric of freedom of religion in this country is being torn by extremists of every stripe, trying to make political mileage out of what should be a non-issue," said the Reverend Skip Lereaux of the Queens Federation of Churches.

Elected officials remain divided over whether the Downtown Manhattan Islamic center should be moved to another location.
