This weekend's India Day Parade will have a new group of marchers.

The South Asian Lesbian Gay Alliance, or SALGA, has been granted permission to be a part of Sunday's celebrations.

The Federation of Indian Associations, which organizes the parade, denied their application last year.

SALGA planned to protest this year's parade, but the organizer's last minute change of heart means they will be marching and not picketing.

Members of the group say they hope this will lead to better understanding within their community.

"What we want out of this is for there to be less homophobia. And for their to be visibility at this parade. But also for us to have a relationship with FIA going forward," said Shawn Jain of the South Asian Lesbian Gay Alliance.

The 30th Annual India Day Parade kicks off this Sunday at 11 a.m.

Participants will march down Madison Avenue from 41st Street to 23rd Street.

August 15 marks the Independence of India from British rule in 1947.
