Moms took center stage Sunday, as New Yorkers lavished the mothers in their lives with gifts and thanks. NY1’s Tara Lynn Wagner caught up with shoppers as they picked up some well-deserved presents for the woman of the hour.It may not have felt like the second Sunday in May. But despite the lack of sun, New Yorkers were determined to let mom bask in her moment.
Street vendors set up tables early, catering to shoppers who were looking to shower the women in the lives with gifts.
"She deserves to get something from me, you know,” said one man. “The whole year, you know doing anything I want, cooking for me, cleaning, shopping and watching and taking care of the two kids, you know, one boy and one girl. She deserves more than that.”
From bouquets to balloons, it was all about mom, not to mention the various other mothers worth thanking and cherishing.
"My wife, my mom, my sister, who's a mom, and my sister's mother-in-law and her grandma,” said a man busy shopping for presents.
"It's Mother’s Day and [celebrating is] the right thing to do,” said another. “My mother took care of me and the mother of my children takes care of my children."
Flowers are of course a mother's day staple, meaning business is blooming at bodegas all across the boroughs. Still, many moms say what they want most on their day is something even simpler.
“I want my kids to cook for me,” said one mom. “I'm cooking for myself."
Although this annual celebration of mom only lasts a day, everyone acknowledges her job is 24/7, 365 days a year. And they say no amount roses or giant balloons can ever repay her for all she does.
"For raising us, for teaching us values, morals and basically supporting us our whole lives," said one child as to why he's celebrating his mom.
"She encourages us like to keep going on, never give up,” seconded another.
NY1 wishes a happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there.
