The Democratic National Committee is telling former State Senator Hiram Monserrate to drop his campaign slogan.

As first reported by Politico, leading Democrats want Monserrate to stop using the logo and "Yes We Can" slogan used by President Barack Obama during his presidential campaign.

The DNC says use of the logo and slogan is not approved, and wants it removed from Monserrate's campaign materials.

Monserrate was expelled from the Senate last month following his October conviction on misdemeanor assault for dragging his girlfriend. But he is running again for the same seat in a special election a week from today.

He's being challenged by Assemblyman Jose Peralta.

Sources also tell the New York Post that if Monserrate's election bid fails, his plan is to run for Peralta's Assembly seat, which would be open.
