Celebrities strutted down a runway in Bryant Park this week for a cause very close to their hearts. NY1’s George Whipple filed the following report. The Heart Truth Red Dress Event raised funds and awareness about heart disease in women. The national campaign is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
"You see the women doing funny things on the runway,” said model Heidi Klum, who, wearing John Galliano, closed out the show. “They're blowing kisses or they do sassy things at the end of the runway or they're twirling along and I think that's what makes it fun."
Felicity Huffman, who got an Oscar nomination for her role in "Transamerica", walked the runway for the first time wearing Oscar de la Renta.
"When they asked me to do it, I started looking up heart disease in women and yes, indeed, it is the number one killer in America, and yes, indeed, it is under the radar,” she said. “So awareness needs to be brought to it."
Olympic swimmer Dara Torres walked in Rachel Roi -- without shoes.
"When I get in the pool I'm very comfortable in my environment,” Torres said. “I'm not comfortable in this environment at all, because everyone's watching you and I'm not used walking down a runway and doing this stuff, so it gets a little nerve racking."
Donna Karan was well-represented by Elisabeth Hasselbeck.
"I'm honored to be wearing Donna Karan tonight,” she said. “She understands a woman's body so well, and with a cause for prevention of heart disease, there couldn't be a better match."
J. Crew dressed journalist Robin Roberts.
"People don't know it's the number one killer,” Roberts said. “Heart disease is the number one killer for women! How can we not know that? I'm a breast cancer survivor and very proud of it and there's a lot of awareness about that and it helped me in my battle."
A pregnant Bethenny Frankel walked the runway in Isabel Oliver.
"I'll work it out when I get there,” said the reality TV star. “There will be a sway, there will be a hip sway, I decided, and there might be a gesture to the belly, an homage to the baby."
Raven-Symoné wore Tidashi and she gave us a sneak peak of what she would do on the runway.
"I can do the side move!” she said.
The first Red Dress event was inaugurated by Nancy Regan.
