A ceremony was held Thursday in Lower Manhattan to celebrate the grand opening of the Battery Park Ice Rink.

Officials and residents say it's a great addition to the neighborhood.

"Lower Manhattan did not have an ice rink. And we had this great field which in the spring, summer, and fall is used by the local league, but it sat empty every winter. So this year we thought let's try a rink and it's here. And we think the reaction's going to be good. It's been good so far," said Battery Park City Authority President Jim Cavanaugh.

"This is one more amenity for children living down here. This ice rink will be something children will be using in Lower Manhattan hopefully for a long time to come," said one Battery Park resident.

The rink is open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends.

It will stay open until the middle of February.

Admission is $10 and skate rentals are $3.
