NYers Of The Week: Volunteers Give City Children A Room Full Of Dreams

The latest New Yorkers of the Week are transforming children's lives, one bedroom at a time. NY1's John Schiumo filed the following report.

A young New Yorker, Jesus German, now has the bedroom of his dreams, inspired by his favorite baseball team.

"I feel I am in Yankee Stadium," he says.

Martha and Alex Dvoryadkin and their organization Blissful Bedrooms transformed Jesus's room in just two days.

"Your environment, what surrounds you, it completely changes everything," says Martha Gold-Dvoryadkin.

The duo started by making over one girl's room, and to date they have made over seven. All of the recipients are students at P.S. 118X in the Bronx, where Martha is a physical therapist. The makeovers are done for free.

"We just see how she become so happy, she was happy to see that. she we just wanted to continue. help people, kids like her," says Alex Dvoryadkin.

"One of the criteria is that the young individual should have a decreased mobility, which means that they are in a wheelchair," says Martha Gold-Dvoryadkin. "Because our reasoning it that they don't get to get out of their house as much as other people and so they spend a lot more time in their bedroom. So we wanted to create an environment where they can dream and live their life."

Thirty volunteers helped make over Jesus's room. The Dvoryadkins even made it possible for Jesus to attend a Yankees game and meet his favorite player, Alex "A-Rod" Rodriguez.

"I will not forget that day," says Jesus.

Jesus has spina bifida, a birth defect where his spinal cord has not developed completely. He usually spends time in a wheelchair, but he wanted to walk into his new Yankees-themed room.

"He walks every day with this brace on and he never complains and never gives up. He's a champion. He's got the stuff the Yankees are made of," says Martha Gold-Dvoryadkin.

"Martha is amazing, the fact that she put so much of her energy in to this and her personal funding into this. It's just so refreshing to find people in a huge city like this who are doing this," says artistic director Karina Vogt.

So, for creating inspiring rooms and inspiration for kids, Martha and Alex Dvoryadkin are our New Yorkers of the Week.
