The Brooklyn Bridge turns 125 years old this week, and this New York icon has been used countless times in movies ever since motion pictures began.
The following are some notable highlights:
Back in the 1940s, Johnny Weissmuller, who was also an Olympic gold medalist, takes a memorable dive off the bridge in “Tarzan's New York Adventure.”
A very famous comedy duo takes a rocket ship ride under the bridge, strictly for laughs, in “Abbott and Costello Go To Mars.”
In 1949, Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly are among a group of sailors on shore leave in the Big Apple who take in the sights in the musical “On The Town.” They make the Brooklyn Bridge one of their must-see stops.
The Brooklyn Bridge is used a big backdrop in the romantic comedy “Moonstruck,” which won Cher an Oscar and also starred Nicolas Cage.
The time-traveling romance “Kate and Leopold” stars Hugh Jackman and Meg Ryan and offers up the bridge from two different centuries.
In “Godzilla,” the famed giant green monster stomps his way around New York and makes his way to the famed bridge.
The Brooklyn Bridge is utilized quite frequently in comic book films.
In “The Fantastic Four,” the Thing causes a huge traffic pile-up when he uses his superhuman strength and wreaks havoc on the bridge's span.
Speaking of action, the bridge can been seen in the Bruce Willis heart-pounder “Die Hard With A Vengeance.”
In “The Siege,” when New York becomes the target of terrorist attacks, the city is practically shut down as U.S. tanks and troops roll out over the Brooklyn Bridge.
In the futuristic sci-fi film “I Am Legend,” the span of the Brooklyn Bridge has been destroyed, but its recognizable towers still stand as Will Smith plays the possible lone survivor in Manhattan.
The bridge is also destroyed, along with the rest of New York, by a tidal wave when a comet hits the earth in the thriller “Deep Impact.”
Fans of “Sex In the City” can also see the Brooklyn Bridge featured prominently in their new movie, which opens up next week. But you don’t have to take our word for it!
