The use of social networking sites are becoming more popular as job seekers try to establish themselves in the online community. NY1's Asa Aarons filed the following report.One of the big complaints among modern job seekers is how impersonal the process has become from layers of bureaucracy to software screening of applicants.
One solution might come strangely enough from a piece of technology that transforms the impersonal to something highly personal. It's a social networking site called LinkedIn. Chances are you've heard of it. But many people have no idea how it can accelerate a job search.
Krista Canfield is a career specialist who regularly trains people on ways to utilize even the basic free LinkedIn service for job hunting.
"The most important part of LinkedIn has to do with number of professionals on the site. There are over 37 million people on the site who can help you find a job," says Canfield.
So how do you become personally memorable in that environment?
Canfield says there are a number of strategies that will make you stand out. Don't let your name float on screen as a bunch of numbers.
"You should make sure to do what we call claiming your name. You'll notice your name will come up more frequently in Google searches because it is name optimized pretty well," says Canfield.
Your searches can be as simple as finding all the human resources executives in a given zip code, or for something that might connect you in some way and increase your odds for an interview.
"Here's one who went to Marist. I can kick off the conversation with the fact I'm familiar with it and start the conversation that way instead of just 'hey do you have a job'," says Canfield.
Canfield says the recommendations feature is sometimes misunderstood.
"Recommendations spread virally. You want to be as specific as you can so you don't wind up with things like 'Krista's got a sense of humor I would love her on my team'," says Canfield.
For better recommendations, ask people to write about actual experiences they shared with you.
The company profiles section can tell you where employees come from and go to. And if you have a legitimate business question, a legitimate answer is not far behind.
