Celebrate Black History Month with a trip to Philadelphia, where a special museum exhibit honors African-American contributions to our nation's history. NY1's Travel reporter Valarie D'Elia filed the following report. With the inauguration of our first African American President, Black History Month takes on a special significance this month with a museum exhibit in Philadelphia.
The exhibit "America I AM: The African American Imprint," which is dedicated to almost 500 years of African-American history, is taking open through early May at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.
The exhibition was conceived by talk show host Tavis Smiley, and features a collection of more than 200 artifacts that mark significant events and include personal items from notable African-Americans.
An interactive area allows visitors to leave their own video imprints, amassing what is designed to become the largest oral history project ever recorded in America.
The exhibit continues on a ten-city, four-year national tour in mid-May.
Admission is $17.50 for adults, $15.50 for seniors and $9 for kids ages 4-12. For more information, visit www.AmericaIAM.org.
