If sipping away the afternoon is your cup of tea, you may want to dip into one of the tea shops listed in the Zagat Gourmet Shopping and Entertaining Guide.
Subtle Tea
121 Madison Avenue

Zagat says "tea experts" brew with nuance at this "cute" Murray Hill spot. The survey says customers can enjoy 40 "delicious" steeped pours accompanied by scones, sandwiches and more.
According to the guide, the staff's ever "ready to help" "the non-connoisseur," and the modern layout's roomy "enough for" a communal table plus a retail "display" of teapots, cups, loose leaves and bath and body products.
Subtle Tea is not yet rated, but Zagat says it has moderate prices.
Tamarind Tea Room
41 East 22nd Street

Surveryors say a "small, well-edited" selection of "exotic teas" makes for a "lovely" experience at this Flatiron District "cozy" tearoom. The guide says tea time here can "go down" with an interesting "twist" - Indian "snacks and sweets" prepared by the "fabulous chefs" at the same-named "sister restaurant next door." If that's not your "taste," some of the usual "accompaniments" like pound cake are "also" offered.
Tamarind Tea Room has yet to be rated, but Zagat finds prices to be moderate.
