"Che," a movie about the life of Che Guevara, opened this week at the 46th New York Film Festival at the Ziegfeld Theatre. Benicio Del Torro plays the iconic Cuban revolutionary.
"I like the fact that he fought for injustice," Del Toro said on the red carpet prior to the screening. "I like that he was braver than me, smarter than me, many things more that me. And in movies you get to be able to play stuff like that. You're proud of any character you get in a movie; I mean, you have to be."
The director of the widely acclaimed film "Traffic," Steven Soderbergh, also helmed this flick.
"The people that I talked to who fought with him and knew him said that he was really uncompromising," Soderbergh said. "He never dropped this sort of revolutionary ideology. He felt you should behave a certain way all the time, that the personal was political. For some people he was hard to be around – that was the most surprising thing that I found."
Demian Bechir plays Fidel Castro, a man who is loved in one place but loathed in others.
"I guess all the great characters have that duality, right?" said Bechir. "And you as an actor are in search of those types of characters."
Del Toro said he was delighted to have "Che" at the New York Film Festival.
"I'm very glad that we were invited to be part of it," he said. "I think everyone involved in this movie is very glad to be here, not only because of the festival but it's because always great to come to New York."
"Che" will make a special run for one week at the Ziegfeld Theatre starting December 12th. Then it may be broken into two movies and distributed nationwide.
