You don't have to go far to have a great time this summer, since great activities are happening right in New York City. NY1's Valarie D'Elia filed the following report.

Don't let the summer slip away before you are able to get away. Some great travel options are in your own backyard. New York isn't called the greatest city in the world for nothing, and these lazy August days are perfect for exploring what the Big Apple has to offer without the crowds.

For the second year in a row, NYC and Co., the city's tourism arm, is taking the guesswork out of a city daycation. On Wednesdays through the rest of the summer, the "Go Local Initiative" is posting a weekly web update of recommended activities for the weekend ahead at www.nycgo.com/golocal.

A sampling of some of the events that will be featured as part of the August line-up of Go Local events include the John Lennon '60s exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex in SoHo and the Fashion and Politics exhibit at FIT.

Mass transit isn't the only way to get around, especially now that you can two wheel it through town with the help of some free bicycling programs. And for the second year in a row, Park Avenue shuts down to traffic on Saturdays in the Summer Streets program, making it a free-for-all for bikers and pedestrians.

You can take a moonlight ride in Central park on August 7 at 10 p.m. and on Governors Island there's an ongoing free bike Fridays program where you don't have to pay to pedal on the last day of the week.

Now here's a D'Elia's Deal you don't want to miss this summer in the city. Check out www.nycgo.com/realdeal for discounts on hotels, parking, shopping, dining and arts and entertainment.
