Subway riders on the Upper West Side may soon be hearing the sounds of nature, along with the noise of the Number 1, 2, and 3 trains.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says the 96th Street Station at Broadway is being equipped with hidden speakers that may be used to play the sounds of the wild. Straphangers would hear chirping birds, rustling leaves, and a flowing brook in the mezzanine area of the station.

The agency says the wilderness soundtrack is being considered as one component of an art installation that would be added when the station is renovated.

If all goes as planned, the soundtrack and art exhibit will be implemented next year.
