A special American flag used to keep hope alive at the World Trade Center will soon be displayed on an aircraft carrier in the city.
Volunteers who sifted through the rubble of the Twin Towers spent Saturday removing the flag from a building in Chinatown.
Organizers say the flag was hung along One Liberty Plaza for two months after the attacks and since then, is used to reunite workers and aid fundraising efforts for those affected by 9/11.
"We're basically trying to build it to make money for charity,” said organizer John McGuire. “There's a charity that we do called the Never Forget Foundation which gives money to soldiers and first responders."
"We enjoy doing this, it means a lot to us,” said John Casalinuovo, the building’s owner. “It shows our support for the country right now things are a little tough no matter what side of the fence your on and this brings us all together."
The flag will also be displayed on the U.S.S. Intrepid when the ship returns to Pier 86 next month.
