According to published reports, the Department of Education is proposing 640 fewer buses for the coming school year, a drop of 14 percent.

A representative for several major bus companies told The Daily News he has never seen such a request, which he claims cuts four times as many routes as normal.

The paper also says the proposed cuts would save the DOE more than $90 million.

School officials told The New York Post that fewer students have been approved for bus service, but they say every eligible student will receive it, and the list of cuts is only a proposal.

Parents told the Daily News that the DOE says routes are being slashed because hundreds of students are being placed in schools closer to home.
