A city police officer faces assault charges in connection with an attack outside a Bronx nightclub.

Marc Rios, 39, voluntarily turned himself in Tuesday.

Investigators say Rios, a 12-year veteran, struck John Roperto in the face with his baton outside El Aguila nightclub in Kingsbridge in the early morning hours of March 30th.

Roperto suffered a fractured cheekbone and injuries to his nose.

Rios' attorney says the officer acted in self defense after Roperto slammed the hood of his police car. Rios was on-duty and in uniform at the time.

An investigation following the incident found the attack to be unprovoked.

Rios was released on his own recognizance until his next court date in November.

He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
