City Shoppers Take Advantage Of Holiday Prices

Despite the jobless rates at a 26-year low and declines in consumer spending, city retailers managed to slash prices to entice thousands of holiday weekend shoppers. NY1's Ty Milburn filed the following report.On a holiday weekend when many people take to the beach, thousands of New Yorkers took to the streets, stores and malls for a little holiday shopping.
In Midtown Manhattan, Christine Cooper had a laundry list of things she wanted to buy.
"I bought two blouses and a pair of pants," said Cooper.
Citywide, shoppers snatched up hot deals as retailers looked to rid their shelves of their summer merchandise.
"I'm off today and I wanted to see what type of deals they have," said a shopper.
Those who looked for bargains found merchandise marked down by 40, 50, 60 and even 70 percent off regular prices.
"Sales were great. They were 75 percent off and I used my 20-percent off coupon. It was great," said a shopper.
Shopper Julia Funk spent a lot but insisted she got a a lot of bang for her buck.
"I do have a budget and I am getting close to the edge of my budget but in comparison to what I would have normally spent, I was surprised at the quantity I could get," said Funk. Today the dollar went a lot further. It doesn't happen everyday."
While most shoppers will admit they didn't need all the things they bought, they say they couldn't resist the good prices.
"Some impulse shopping one in a while, it's good for the heart," said a consumer.
