The Parks Department suspended swimming at several city beaches Sunday as crews worked to locate the source of a sewage leak.
The city Department of Environmental Protection says storms most likely caused a sewage treatment plant to overflow Saturday night.
Until further notice, swimming is not permitted at Coney Island, Manhattan Beach, Kiddie/Geritsen Beach and Kingsborough/Seagate Beach in Brooklyn, as well as Douglaston Manor Beach in Queens.
In Coney Island, hundreds of beachgoers flocked to the beach Sunday to soak up the sun, but were restricted to the sand and nearby boardwalk.
"This is the first time I heard about this, really the first time, it's very surprising," said one beach-goer.
"Maybe there was some kind of sewage that had spilled over so it's a little disappointing because it's one of the first beautiful days of the summer," said another beach-goer.
"We came to the beach. We were so excited to go in. And then lifeguards told us we couldn't go in," said a third.
The Parks Department says the boardwalk and sand will remain open to public.
DEP officials say they expect to fully reopen the beaches by Tuesday.
