New Yorkers walked today in the first annual walk to raise funds to find a cure for Lou Gehrig's disease.
The first annual Walk to Defeat ALS started at Pier 46 in the West Village near the West Side Highway, with thousands of people taking part. The walk goes along the Hudson River to Pier 96.
State Senator Tom Duane and Kim Girardi, wife of Yankees manager Joe Girardi, helped get the walk started on the right foot.
“After attending a dinner last winter for ALS, I was just very moved by what the people go through and what the ALS Association is doing and that's why I'm here today," said Kim Girardi.
Money raised will go towards research for a cure for the disease.
"May is ALS Awareness Month, and we want to get the word out that ALS is a disease that still has no effective treatment or cure,” said Dorine Gordon, president of the New York Chapter of ALS Association.
The ALS association says a person in this country is diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease every hour and a half.
