A new survey released Thursday shows some area pharmacies may still be carrying recalled children's cough and cold drops.
State Senator John Sabini says of the 26 pharmacies reviewed in Queens, over 50 percent still had the medicine on store shelves. Many drug makers voluntarily recalled the items amid growing safety concerns for children younger than two.
Just last week, federal health advisers recommended the drugs not be used for children under age six.
"We need to get word out to folks that these products should not be used and should not be sold, and parents of infants should find other remedies through their doctor rather than administering these medicines,” said Sabini.
Last week doctors warned government officials that cough medicines, decongestants, and antihistamines aren't proven to work in young children and can even be dangerous.
Despite their own recall, drug makers have said the medicines work and are safe if used as directed.
