A homeless shelter that serves young trans-gender people is set to shut down on January 1st, and that has those who rely on the facility scrambling to find another home.
Carmen's Place is located in the basement of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Astoria. The church is being shut down at the end of the year by the diocese. The church's pastor and concerned parishioners are hoping to find another place to locate the shelter.
Residents say they are afraid of being abused or mistreated at other shelters.
"You really don't have much privacy at the other shelters where you go, I can hide out here and just do what I need to do, whether it's studying or make music, or just think about my personal life," said Carmen's Place resident Terry.
"I was taken advantage of in those shelters like that. So I was lucky that I bumped into Terry at one of the day centers where I was trying to get advice and he brought me up here," said resident Charles. "And since then, I've felt safe, secure, you know where people look out after me."
