Some local officials are taking aim at illegal ads plastered around the city.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer calls the posters and signs eyesores. The ads are often posted on scaffolding and buildings around Manhattan and other boroughs.

The illegal practice has been going on for decades, but now city leaders say enough if enough.

"There's a black market that has been going on for a whole long time where developers, landlords, advertisers have been in cohoots putting up illegal billboards on some of our most prestigious and landmark buildings," said Stringer.

Stringer points to this large Citibank sign on the historic Flatiron building. The borough president says its was placed there illegally.

After the news conference, the Department of Buildings announced some new rules. Companies that hang signs illegally can be fined $25,000 per day, and the city has the right to remove them.
