NY1's Jill Scott filed this report, as our coverage of Staten Island Week continues.
It’s better than a flea market and more fun than a yard sale. If you are one who loves to hunt for a good bargain, do we have a great find for you!
“[We have] antique furniture, jewelry, rugs, miscellaneous stuff, games, toys - really a lot of artwork,” says David Bentley Brown of Richmond Galleries on Staten Island.
Richmond Galleries is somewhat of the garage sale of auction houses. Forget Sotheby’s or Christies, this place auctions off the things you never think would be up for grabs, at prices that that will have you sold!
David Bentley Brown is the third generation of auctioneers at this Staten Island treasure. For more than 100 years he and his family have been taking items off your hands and putting them on the auction block.
“We started out as a storage company in 1888, where we moved people with carriages and all that,” he says. “Then people wouldn't pick up their stuff or passed away and didn't pay the bill, so my grandfather said, ÎWell, we’ve got to get the money somehow, so we will have an auction,’ and that's how it started.”
And it started something big for bargain hunters. Every six weeks or so they have an open house where they clean house, selling items from private individuals or estates.
“I like old chairs, like folding chairs. I collect them. I’ve gotten some where you get 20 for $$5,” says one Staten Islander.
“I bought a rococo headboard for $$25 and I sold it for $$1,500,” says another.
“Sometimes I raise my hand and I don't even know what the item is,” says a third loyal customer. “I still end up making money on it.”
Those who visit range from art dealers, resellers, collectors, or just people looking for fun finds.
While the entire place is filled with great finds, perhaps some of the best treasures are literally hidden in boxes, which can go for $$10-$$20, where you can find hundreds of dollars with of gems.
“The box lots are the real surprise,” says one customer. “Every now and then there will be something really good in there and you will be very happy if you sift through it.”
For sellers, Richmond Galleries takes a 30 percent commission. But they will also come to your home to give you an estimate.
Previews are held a few days before each auction so you can see what's up for grabs. Or you can view items online at

This place is such a well kept secret that many bidders were unhappy to see the media there. So now that the word is out, you may want to hurry up and place your bid before everything is going, going, gone.
