Some West Village residents say all they want for Christmas is for Mayor Michael Bloomberg to save their neighborhood.
They turned out at City Hall Monday to display a giant holiday card asking the mayor not to allow at least seven historic buildings to be demolished. The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and elected officials are calling on the city to extend landmark protections to the structures.
"We presented to the City Planning Commission and to the Landmarks Commission an absolutely doable plan,” said Manhattan State Senator Thomas Duane. “It's reasonable, and it's right. So Mr. Mayor, please don't let our neighborhood be chopped away building by building."
Greenwich Village residents say they are fighting to extend the western boundary of a proposed historic district that is currently slated to be drawn short of West Street. They argue that the area beyond West Street was once an old river-landing settlement, and that it must be preserved.
