Fewer than 100 murders have been recorded in Manhattan in 2002 — the first year that has happened since the 19th century.
According to the Daily News, the number of homicides in Manhattan this year stands at 82. There wasn’t a single year in the 20th century that the number dipped below 100, the paper said.
There were 102 murders in Manhattan in 1900, the News reports, and that number grew steadily until a peak of 661 in 1972.
Across the five boroughs, the murder rate dropped 11 percent this year, for a total of 575 homicides.
