Cyclists Celebrate New York In Five Borough Tour

By: NY1 News

Cycling to celebrate the spirit of New York was the theme of Sunday’s bike tour of all five boroughs.

Nearly 30,000 cyclists from around the world trekked 42 miles around the city in the 25th annual "Bike New York: 5 Borough Bike Tour.”

The starting line was on Church Street, a block away from the World Trade Center site. Marine reservists led the pack of bikers in memory of the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

“It's pretty clear to everybody that Lower Manhattan was pretty devastated after September 11, and many would have doubted if we could pull this off again,” said Transportation Commissioner Iris Weinshall. “But here we are. It's now May and the streets are in good condition. People are coming back to Lower Manhattan. It's a great event.”

The tour took cyclists up Sixth Avenue, through Central Park and then through the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn, wrapping up on Staten Island.
