From jewelry to documents, do you have a good hiding spot for valuables in your home?
If you are in the market for a standard home safe, Lev Rauchman of Cosmic Fischer locks has some tips on what you should look for.
First, you need to decide what you will be securing, which will help you determine what size and what type.
There are two basic types of safes: fireproof and burglary proof.
"If you decide you need the safe to secure your papers, then you should definitely get a fireproof safe," said Rauchman. "A fireproof safe has insulation inside that will protect the paper inside from burning, if there is a fire directly around the safe."
Because of the insulation, a standard fireproof safe cannot be bolted to the floor. A burglary-proof safe, on the other hand, is designed for things like jewelry and other heirlooms and it can be bolted to the floor, so no one can run off with it. However, the burglary-proof safe will not have that protective lining.
There are models that are hybrids, but they are on the higher end in terms of price.
Buyers also need to consider the locking mechanism.
"The four types of locking mechanisms, the first one is a key, which is the cheapest way of getting a safe," said Rauchman. "The second one is a dial, which his the most conventional way, most popular, which you see in the movies. The third one is the digital, the digital keypad, which is very user-friendly."
The last option is a combination device, which includes two different locking mechanisms. This is the safest alternative.
Those who are interested in a combination mechanism, but are afraid they may forget the combination, he suggests getting a digital one. This way you can set the code, and if you forget it, there is an override key. Just make sure to keep the key in a safe place.
You should also think about where in your home you want to the put the safe. It can be dug into a floor, cut out in a wall behind a picture, or placed in an inconspicuous spot.
But find out if there is a fee for installation. The safe itself can start at around $150 and go all the way up.
But whatever you spend, having a device that secures your belongings and your piece of mind, is the perfect combination.
