Josh Weinstein has quite the resume for a high school senior. He’s co-captain of the soccer team, starting goalie on the hockey team, and just for the heck of it, he joined the spring track team for the first time as a senior.

On top of that, he runs an impressive school website and is a nationally ranked chess player, all while maintaining a 95 average at Manhattan's Stuyvesant High School, one of the best in the city.

“Soccer, the games sometimes don’t end or conclude until after 6:00. Many of the athletes have to travel very long and far to get home and then do the tremendous amount of work and be back in school by 8:00 in the morning,” says Assistant Principal for Physical Education Martha Singer. “It’s a rare breed, and he’s one of them.”

“On Stuycom.net, pictures are a big feature,” says Weinstein. “I added a forum to make it more interactive, and some features like ÎSenioritis,’ which is where everyone is getting into college, and some cartoons, some daily trivia and a chat room.”

“There is an official school website, but it tends to just have scheduling information and be sort of on the dry side,” says Student Affairs Coordinator Matt Polazzo. “Josh, he has scheduling and dances and student events, but also his personal life and the character of himself, and so definitely lots of people are always checking it out and reading it. He puts pictures of students up.”

When Josh isn't hard at work on the ice, he's testing his skills across the chessboard from anyone willing to take on someone who's been honing his skills since the age of five.

“I've been playing chess for a while, since kindergarten actually. It’s been about 12 years now,” he says. “I started in Dalton, and they have a strong chess program there where we started in kindergarten. I was the only one who stayed awake, so that’s what I credit my skills to; being the only one who stayed awake in the kindergarten classes. Basically over time I got a lot better.”

They have a pretty good chess club at Princeton University, and that’s where Josh will take his talents next year. Gaining entrance to the Ivy League school is a dream come true.

“Going to Princeton allows me to study anything I want, have basically all the resources for any subject and be able to do whatever I want in life,” he says. “It’s perfect for undergrad for studying anything, and that’s what education is all about.”

So, for his leadership in sports, and having all the right moves in academics and elsewhere, Josh Weinstein is our Health Plus/NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week.

The NY1/Health Plus Scholar Athlete program celebrates student athletes who successfully combine academics with athletics, and also find time for community service. The program, operated in conjunction with the New York City Department of Education, is open to any senior attending a New York City public high school. Selected students receive a $$2,000 scholarship to the school they choose to attend in the fall.

To apply, download and print out the official Scholar Athlete application, then mail it to the address on the form.
