The city's Landmarks Preservation Commission has given the go-ahead to the Saint Vincent's Hospital renovation plan.
The plan calls for converting the hospital's current Seventh Avenue site in Greenwich Village into a residential housing complex. It involves the demolition of some buildings, the renovation of others as well as new construction.
The plan was approved Tuesday with a 9-to-1 vote.
The opposing commissioner says the building on Seventh Avenue is too tall and construction on each building should be approved separately, not as part of one project.
The commission has already approved plans for a new $800 million hospital tower across the street, on the grounds of the historic O'Toole building.
The project still has several major hurdles to clear including zoning approvals from the City Council and the City Planning Commission.
Demolition of the O'Toole building also faces a legal challenge.
