The sister of a driver accused of killing an elderly couple on Staten Island was recently accused of lying to police.
Mirsada Nikezi was arraigned on charges of filing a false instrument and falsely reporting an incident.
She was released on her own recognizance and could face up to a year in prison if convicted.
Police say Allmir Lekperic, 26, seen above, asked his sister to cover his tracks by lying that his car had been stolen.
He is charged with leaving the scene and driving with a suspended license.
Law enforcement officials say Lekperic had his driver's license suspended 29 times.
Police say Lekperic hit Peter Sabados, 78, and his 77-year-old wife Lillian as they crossed the street Wednesday night on their way to a Mass.
Both were pronounced dead at Staten Island University Hospital.
Lekperic was released Friday on $50,000 bail.
