The upcoming season for Jazz at Lincoln Center is already taking shape, featuring an ensemble of both newcomers and legends. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report.

Wynton Marsalis is a busy man. It's been announced he'll play the Abu Dabi Festival in the United Arab Emirates later this month -- his debut in the region. The New York Philharmonic also recently announced it will kick off its season in September with a new work by Marsalis. And then, of course, there's Marsalis' day job as the Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. He has just announced their upcoming season which includes an appearance by another Marsalis.

"My brother Branford is always on the road when his group is playing. He is coming this year with Terrace Blanchard, another New Orleans homeboy, who has written many great film scores and is also a great piano player. He doesn't play the piano too much in public but he can play," Marsalis said. "They are going to be giving their, their two groups will play on the same night. They always have something interesting to say."

The 2010/2011 season includes lots of big names. The "New Visionary Voices" series will feature the likes of Bobby McFerrin and Sweet Honey in the Rock. Also new this year, Michael Feinstein will curate a new jazz and popular song series. Jazz rocker Chick Corea will also perform.

But not all the guest are musicians.

Returning to the house of Swing is Ken Burns, the filmmaker behind the landmark documentary "Jazz." His latest film tackles prohibition. The concert will feature music from that era.

"We're going to be doing 'Prohibition,' we did music for the film. That's a great fertile time for American music," Marsalis said. "We're going to be playing a lot of the songs and he is going to be narrating and talking about the film. I don't know what he is going to come up with, he always comes up with some creative twist on something."

Also an expert in the era's music is bandleader Vince Giordano. His vintage tunes and instruments are also part of the lineup.

So when does Wynton Marsalis find time to compose for the season opener of the New York Philharmonic?

"I'm writing a piece now as a matter of fact i should be writing it write now," Marsalis said.

Marsalis says he's not just busy writing and performing. Like all arts organizations these days, JALC is busy fundraising and trying to deal with tough economic times.

"It's been rough for everybody with the corporations changing, but people played concerts before they had corporations. They are going to keep playing," Marsalis said.

The season kicks off with legendary drummer Roy Haynes on September 25. He's going to perform with with his own Fountain of Youth Band. It's an all-star lineup that will of course feature the very busy Wynton Marsalis.
