Federal officials reportedly wants to make more room on the airwaves for high-speed Internet access.

The New York Times reports the Federal Communications Commission is proposing a 10-year plan that will increase broadband Internet's portion of the spectrum it shares with radio, television, telephone and other forms of communication.

The paper says the proposal, which will be sent to Congress Tuesday, will signal a shift to broadband Internet as the dominant network.

Giant telecommunication firms are expected to resist the effort.

There is some question over the extent of jurisdiction the FCC has over Internet providers like AT&T and Comcast that set Internet pricing and speeds.

The government proposal would also reportedly subsidize the spread of high-speed Internet service into rural parts of the country that are not yet wired.
