Five men were arrested and charged Wednesday in connection with the shooting of a 15-year-old girl in the Bronx that police say may have been an act of revenge.

Vada Vasquez was shot while walking home from school Monday afternoon. She is currently in a medically-induced coma and remains in critical condition in Lincoln Hospital.

Police say Carvette Gentles, 16, Rohan Francis, 18, Cleve Smith, 20, Clivie Smith, 19, and Dwayne Taylor, 23, are being charged with attempted murder, assault with attempt to cause serious injury with a weapon and criminal use of a firearm.

Police say Gentles, pictured above, is the shooter.

Gentile was solemn as he left the 42nd Police Precinct house earlier today. His alleged accomplices were more vocal – screaming that they were innocent and they were being set up.

Police centered their investigation on the intended target – 19-year-old Tyrone Creighton. According to police, Creighton was approached by all of the suspects outside a bodega in Morrisania. As he ran off along Home Street, near the teen shooting victim, he was shot twice. Creighton remains hospitalized.

Police believe a man on a bike shot Creighton as revenge on his brother, who was involved in an attack on Rikers Island.

"We believe, and we're still exploring this theory, that there was a fight in Rikers Island involving Tyrone Creighton's two brothers and another individual," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. "The other individual was beaten up in this fight, and this shooting may be in retaliation."

According to Kelly, all of the suspects except for the shooter have a long criminal record.

"They were handing off the gun from one to the other, we believe they were attempting to get the weapon to the shooter, Carvette Gentile, because he had no criminal record," Kelly said.

In response to the shooting, Mayor Michael Bloomberg again pushed the need to get guns off the street.

"Carrying an illegal gun is one of the dumbest and most dangerous things you can do, and it's why an innocent young girl in the Bronx is now hanging on for dear life,” Bloomberg said. “It's a terrible tragedy. And I would like to ask all New Yorkers to send their thoughts and prayers to Lincoln Hospital and pray for Vada Vasquez and hopefully she'll find some way to pull through this. This is just a young life, all the promise in the world."

A vigil was held Tuesday night near the shooting scene, while Vasquez had emergency surgery to remove bullet fragments from her skull. She is currently in a medically-induced coma and listed in critical condition.

As of November 15th, police said there were 54 shooting victims in the 42nd precinct, up from 41 by the same time last year -- a 32 percent increase, according to the NYPD's statistics.

Commissioner Kelly says, overall, shootings in the Bronx are down and that he will leave it to the borough commander to determine whether there's any need for increased security in the Morrisania section.

Meanwhile, a teenager is under arrest for a deadly triple shooting, which also happened Monday in the Bronx.

Phillip Carr, 17, is facing murder charges.

Police say he opened fire in the courtyard of a building on Prospect Avenue, killing 19-year-old Felix Delvalle.

A 42-year-old man and 58-year-old woman were also hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
