December begins with an opportunity to get the extra coats out of your closet and onto the backs of people who desperately need them.

Nearly 70,000 coats are collected each year at hundreds of New York Cares drop off locations throughout the five boroughs, including the Port Authority, Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal.

The volunteer organization has collected over one million coats since 1989.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly will kick off this year's drive with former New York Knicks and Nets player Dikembe Mutombo. The two will help fit 50 residents of Manhattan's Bowery Mission with coats.
