An activist website has listed thousands of pager messages that were allegedly intercepted in the moments following the September 11th attacks.

According to Wikileaks.org, the messages were sent by federal and local officials, but many of them appear to be from regular New Yorkers who were either checking in with loved ones or trying to explain the terror of running from the falling towers.

A large quantity of messages seem to be automated updates on the status of numerous computer systems, with an increasing number of errors reported as the attacks get underway.

Personal messages exchanged prior to the attacks include mundane exchanges about routine computer problems and business meeting plans. The first message regarding the attacks comes at 25 seconds after 8:50 a.m. and says, "A plane crashed thru the twin towers. Real bad..BR."

Within minutes there are messages like "Please call your wife at home right away" and later there are exchanges about the worsening conditions.

One of message reads, "Don't leave the building. One of the towers just collapsed."

Fire and police department officials have been unable to verify any of the messages as department communications.

A spokesperson for the website says the messages were submitted anonymously.
