Family and friends gathered in Jamaica, Queens Saturday to attend the funeral for the victims of a double murder. Borough reporter Ruschell Boone filed the following report.

Mourners leaned on each other for support at the funeral of Edna Herrarte and her 14-year-old son Daniel in Jamaica, Queens Saturday.

Herrarte's husband Otto is accused of slitting the throats of his wife and son two weeks ago and stuffing them in a closet in their home in Corona.

"It is very hard. Nobody deserves to die the way she did," said Maria Lopez, the victims' cousin.

According to investigators, Otto Herrarte claims that a rare multiple-personality disorder is to blame. He says his other personality, "Roberto," was responsible for the killings.

Family members have said they do not believe that story, but on Saturday they were only coming to terms with their loss.

"Everybody is hurting right now, but we've seen the Lord's strength and everything. So we are strengthened by our family, our friends and our church," said cousin Aaron Villela.

"We know that God is blessing us and we will overcome this," said cousin Byron Villela.

More than 100 people attended the funeral, including the Herrartes' surviving 15-year-old David, who was not home at the time of his father's alleged attack. Now David Herrarte lives with relatives, and family members say he's doing well under the circumstances.

"He thinks that he stayed in this world because there is a purpose for him. He say he's going to do the best, which he thinks his mother wanted for him to do," said cousin Vilma Chavez.

Some of Edna Herrarte's family members from Guatemala were also able to attend the funeral service after receiving emergency visas.

"Senator [Charles] Schumer's office was very helpful, along with our office, in getting visas and passports issued to about six family members," said Queens Senator Hiram Monserrate. "Brothers and sisters that are here today to bury their family members."

Otto Herrarte has been charged with second-degree murder, weapons possession and evidence tampering. He has also been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation before returning to court next month.
