Night skies over Manhattan were lit Friday as the eighth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks approaches.

The beams known as the "Tribute in Light," which is made of two banks of 88 separate spotlights, were tested Friday night. They were designed to fill the hole in the skyline left by the collapse of the World Trade Center.

The lights were first lit in March 2002 to mark the six-month anniversary of the attacks.

Artists and designers from the Municipal Art Society and Creative Time came up with the concept.
